Open studio Martin Bonnaz

Artist-in-residence

From 01/04/2022 to 02/04/2022

Fondation CAB Brussels is pleased to present our 17th artist-in-residence, Martin Bonnaz (b.1994, Annemasse, France) who has won the Fondation CAB 2021 prize that rewards a graduate student from La Cambre.

Martin Bonnaz studied at the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne with teachers such as Francis Baudevin, Philippe Decrauzat, Stéphane Dafflon and Stéphane Kropf who influenced his artistic practice, which is part of the Neo-Geo and Concrete Art movements.

His artistic approach is based on a relationship between form and translation of his mother tongue; sign language. The artist’s gesture is then seen as a means of materialization and transformation interwoven into the matrix of this language. The genesis of the gesture is thus telescoped between formulation and formal creation.

Through his paintings with repetitive and evolving patterns, he shows a multitude of possibilities.  The challenge of his creation is to make visible a fusion of historical, artistic, musical and philosophical references through an attentive look with a promise of renewal. The visible then takes on an introspective, sensitive, and reflective dimension in the manner of a psychedelic experience.

Crop Circle, a group exhibition around his practice and the position of minimal and conceptual art today, will take place on Saturday 19th March from 12 to 6 pm in the studio of the residency.

To close the residency, Martin will open the doors of his studio on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd April from 12 to 6 pm for a public visit.
